Emily Puckett presented her talk, “Maintaining Bears’ Adaptive Potential: monitoring and assessing genetic indicators in Ursidae” at the 28th International Bear Association Conference in Edmonton, Canada. This work is a collaborative effort with Alex Kopatz from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research in Trondheim, Norway. We are calling on the world’s bear experts to come together to collect the data needed to assess adaptive potential as outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Over the next 1-2 years, Emily and Alex plan to network with bear experts from around the globe to collect this data and then provide back to participants and governments. We hope to build a useful tool to understand the geography of adaptive diversity within each of the eight bear species.
